Before the first weekly update, I should probably introduce the two people who will keep appearing here.

I’m Frea. I work online as a consultant, and people usually talk to me when something has become difficult to see clearly from the inside. I listen, ask questions, and try to separate what happened from what it seems to mean. Sometimes the most useful part comes later, when I look back over a conversation and notice the traces connecting several apparently unrelated worries. One of the people who regularly talks with me is a student I call Shine.

Shine studied bioinformatics before moving into Drug Regulatory Affairs and Policy. She hopes to work between European and Asian regulatory systems, helping medical products cross not only borders but also differences in evidence, law and institutional expectations.

She takes that direction seriously. Sometimes, perhaps, too seriously. A course choice can begin to feel as though it will decide her whole career. An uncertain answer from a professor can become a warning about the future. A shortage of suitable jobs can quietly turn into the fear that she has not worked hard enough.

Shine does not come to me because she has nothing to say. Usually, she arrives with many thoughts at once: observations, suspicions, practical worries and questions much larger than the decision immediately in front of her. My job is not to dismiss those questions. I help her place each one at the right distance and decide which parts actually belong to her.

This is the beginning of our weekly updates. At the end of each week, I will look back over what Shine brought to me, what it first seemed to mean, and what became clearer. I will follow the traces and try to find the larger pattern underneath them.

So, that is who we are. The first weekly update begins here.
